Amaterasu means Shining Heaven and she is the beautifully illuminated Sun Goddess and Ruler of Heaven. Her legend speaks of her radiance emanating from the sky, bringing light to the world. A time of great shadow came when she retreated into a cave, closing herself in with a boulder. She sought to escape the awful noise created by her brother the storm-god Susanowa, as he ravaged the land. Without her light, the world fell into darkness and where once was life, was then ruled by demons.
The other gods were unsuccessful in luring her from the cave until at last Uzume succeeded by dancing comically. The Goddess’ interest was captured upon hearing the laughter of the gods outside, and when she emerged from the cave’s darkness, a streak of her light shined through. She caught a glimpse of her brilliant light in a mirror Uzume hung from a tree nearby. When she drew closer to get a better look at the reflection, the gods embraced her, pulling her from the cave. She then returned to the heavens bringing light and life to the world once more.
Her legend parallels our soul's journey. Even in times we think we'll never feel happiness again because of what we've endured in life, our light forever remains intact. We only need to see it, to pull ourselves from the darkness of despair, and find there is joy to be had again.
This image is also a representation of the Divine Feminine. She has been known by many names throughout our world's history and in the Japanese culture, She is known as the Goddess Amaterasu. She embodies the light of Heaven in the Land of the Rising Sun, hence she is depicted like a sun with radiant light emanating from her. As the Feminine Creator is the most powerful, her fan holds the image of the dragon, mightiest of all creatures.
In this radiant sunset, Amaterasu stands before an actual Torii monument which exists on this shore in Japan, where they say one can feel deep peace. In tradition, the Torii or Gate marks the entrance into a holy place. Once one passes through it, they leave the ordinary world behind and enter into the sacred. The deeper meaning is finding the peace, joy and love we seek, by seeing the truth about ourselves. Discovering the beauty, power and grace we have within, is a gateway to our own personal heaven.
Angus on the Other Side teaches that every time you see Amaterasu’s image, it registers in your subconscious mind, like a physical affirmation of the beauty and radiant light within you, as well as the Goddess’ presence in your life. This visual reminder strengthens your connection with the Mother God, making you more aware She's there, and likely to call on Her in dark times to help you shine your light in the world.
This is why I create this art and Vera relays Angel information from Angus. From our heart to yours, we pray you remember to call on your Divine Mother for help on your life path.
